"Ryubu" combines the words "Ryukyu" and "buyou" (dance) to refer to the traditional dances of Okinawa. From the 15th through the 19th century, Okinawa was an independent country known as the "Ryukyu Kingdom". Many of the traditional dances of Okinawa date back to this era.
Ryubu combines the influence of Japan, China and Southeast Asia into the indigenous dances of the villages and islands of the Ryukyu. Ryubu mirrors the unique culture of Okinawa -- elegant and dynamic; colorful and subdued; plaintive and robust.
"Ryubu" is different from Japanese dance (Nihon buyou). Come and see the difference!
